I’m back from Iceland! And I’m exhausted, so I’m not going to share tons of pictures right now. Here’s one of our trusty Jimny, though. It was a 2014 with about 115,000km on it, a 5-speed manual, 4 wheel drive,
and heat. That’s... about it. It was all we needed.
Strictly speaking, “off-roading” isn’t really allowed in Iceland. But there are plenty of roads that are quite rugged if you wish to try them, and in this case, this was a huge embankment off the edge of a dirt... parking lot(?) where you could take a ferry over to Vestmannaeyjar (aka “Westman Islands”). One of the biggest reasons you’re not allowed to just drive off the roads anywhere you like is because of the damage to the fragile ecosystem. This was a huge pile of rocks, put there by people, filled in with sand by nature. There wasn’t a land-based plant within 200 meters.
I figured it was ok. We did not drive around on that beach; you can’t really tell but it’s about a six foot drop to the left of the Jimny. Not sheer, but quite steep.
This was the view to our south, of the aforementioned islands:
More to come.

Ooh! Spending some time in Reykjavík soon. Where did you go?

I really love those little things. The only 4x4 I would really want to own, simple, rugged, reliable!

We had basically 3 days to explore, so we went to “Thingvellir” park, up to Geysir and Gullfoss beyond that, among a bunch of other amazing stuff in that area. Then down the south shore toward Seljalandsfoss, the coastline, and then out toward the Blue Lagoon for our last night/ partial day. We did spend half a day in Reykjavic.
What brings you there? I wish we could have spent a night there, looks like the place comes alive at night. It was telling that the cafe we went to didn’t open until 9 am.

Iceland has government-sponsored tourism, which is pretty rad. Iceland Air happened to have the least expensive flight from me to Amsterdam and Iceland Air will allow a no-cost stopover in Reykjavík (keflavic airport) for 4 or 5 nights, so I opted to spend an extra night there.

Reykjavik is awesome! Random advice from my brief time there: Make sure you pop down to Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur to try the famous hot dogs! If you have time, Geysir and the E yjafjallajökull volcano are pretty close, and the view from the Fljotsdalur HI Hostel is swanky (although I think it closes in the fall, but the area is still quite nice).

Yeah I guess that’s a pretty common thing, Iceland Air even had a #mystopover thing they were pushing. They’ll bus you down to the Blue Lagoon, which is like, the most touristy and over-priced thing I’ve ever seen, until I was in it. Then it was actually really cool. And I’ve been to a few other big hot springs before, weirdly enough.
